Architect of the Capitol, Alan Hantman, Leone Reeder, Chair of the National Fund, First Lady, Laura Bush, Congressman Vernon Ehlers and Vice Chairman of the Joint Committee on the Library of Congress officially opened the National Garden on October 6, 2006.

Description:
The National Garden is an outdoor garden addition to the U.S. Botanic Garden Conservatory. The area will have surrounding stone walls enclosing stone pathways through gardens and ponds as well as featured buildings such as the First Ladies Water Garden and the Environmental Learning Center.

The sitework consists of extensive utility relocation, excavation, new utilities, new concrete foundations, and special soil mixes. Finishes include ornamental stone at the garden area and high end fit-out of the public areas at the Learning Center.
