Description:
The seven acre stone plaza consists of stone columns and arches
surrounding the central Rainbow Pool with fountains. The memorial
contains extensive ornamental artwork and sculptures. The memorial
also required extensive utility/slurry wall/foundation work to build
the tunnels for massive equipment and more than 2 miles of piping
systems. In addition, the adjacent site covered over 50 acres including
visitor and information centers, roads & walks, and landscaping.
The World War II Memorial honors the 16 million who served in the
armed forces of the U.S., the more than 400,000 who died, and all
who supported the war effort from home. Symbolic of the defining
event of the 20th Century, the memorial is a monument to the spirit,
sacrifice, and commitment of the American people.
The memorial was dedicated on Memorial Day, May 29, 2004. Over
800,000 people participated in the opening weekend ceremonies including
President George W. Bush, former Presidents Clinton and Bush, and
thousands of WWII veterans and their families.
